Subaru concept points to new fire-breathing WRX

Sub

Remember Subaru's Advanced Tourer concept from last year's Tokyo motor show? Believed to preview the next Liberty, the silver wagon was virtually ignored as the media pored over the BRZ coupe, co-developed with Toyota.

But it turns out the Advanced Tourer could actually point to the next Impreza, or more importantly, a fire-breathing WRX, according to new reports.

Due in 2015, the next-generation ''Rex'' and its sibling, the STI, are likely to get a harder edge following complaints that the current generation is too civilised and tame. The WRX and STI have become separate models in the Subaru range, no longer part of the normal Impreza model cycle.

Though details remain few, the rorty pair are believed to be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine, possibly with direct injection - down from the current models' 2.5-litre unit - with power sent to all four wheels.

The STI will again deliver even more power, bigger brakes and even sharper handling to maintain its flagship status.

Despite the engine downsize, expect the WRX to muster more power and torque than the current car's 195kW/343Nm outputs while using significantly less fuel. Subaru is believed to have taken a patent on electrically powered turbo technology, which could eradicate complicated piping associated with turbocharging and create power more efficiently with less turbo lag.

The company also plans to roll out continuously variable transmissions across all its volume-selling models, and possibly even the WRX, for a claimed 20 per cent fuel saving over a conventional automatic.

While the car's interior is said to become more mature, the exterior will be more aggressive to suit the personality of the rally-ready racer. Overall, it will reportedly adopt the Advanced Tourer's angular styling.

Subaru Receives Top Grade from TrueCar.com Amidst Record Sales

Sub

Subaru achieved its best-ever May sales in the United States last month, but according to vehicle-pricing site TrueCar.com, the automaker’s impressive performance extended beyond just the units it sold. Surpassing prior leader BMW, Subaru had the highest grade in TrueCar.com’s May 2012 Performance Scorecards, which evaluated each automaker on a variety of factors ranging from pricing and incentives to customer loyalty and market share.

Subaru earned an A+ in its May 2012 Performance Scorecard, while BMW fell into a tie for second with an A grade. Factoring into Subaru’s score were its record-breaking May sales, which were up 48 percent compared to the same month last year. Year-to-date, Subaru has moved 136,602 vehicles in the United States, a 22-percent gain compared to the same period in 2011.

“More and more buyers are realizing that Subarus offer the most complete package, whether you’re looking at reliability and capability or pricing and incentives,” said Chris Dunn, general sales manager of Mastria Subaru, a Subaru dealer in Massachusetts. “The new Impreza is a great example of that all-around appeal. It gives drivers the all-wheel-drive ability expected from a Subaru while still returning 36 mpg on the highway.”

Redesigned to become lighter, faster and more fuel efficient than previous models, the 2012 Subaru Impreza has been a popular item in showrooms since its debut last fall. Sales of the Impreza were up more than 235 percent in May year-over-year, moving 6,786 units. So far in 2012, Subaru has sold 34,677 units of the compact car, a 170-percent jump compared to the same period last year.

The Subaru Legacy sedan and Outback wagon also continued their strong 2012 sales performances last month, increasing by 23 percent and 9 percent respectively compared to May 2011. With 20,378 units tallied through May, sales of the Legacy are up 14 percent year-over-year. Meanwhile, sales of the volume-leading Outback have risen 3 percent in that same period, totaling 44,800 units.

As more buyers turn to Subaru vehicles, the automaker has created a new social guidebook on Facebook that allows owners and Subaru fans to share their favorite places and activities with each other. Called the Subaru Guide to Everything, the site allows users to post their top locations for hiking, camping and biking, as well as recommended dog parks and dining spots. It can be viewed at http://guidetoeverything.subaru.com/facebook.>

“Every Subaru owner has a strong sense of adventure in one way or another, so there will be tons of great locations to be explored on the new guidebook,” added Dunn. “There are already several Massachusetts spots submitted by users that I’m sure our customers would love to check out.”

2012 Subaru BRZ Review

Subaru

  • New Subaru coupe tested
  • Price from £24,995
  • 36.2mpg; 181g/km CO2

The Subaru BRZ is a low-slung, lightweight, rear-wheel-drive coupe. It represents the first fruits of an engineering partnership between Subaru and Toyota; marriage that also spawned the Toyota GT86.

Side by side the only differences between the two cars are to the front bumper and badges, while the two cars are mechanically identical, bar the Subaru's slightly stiffer suspension.

What's the 2012 Subaru BRZ like to drive?
Perhaps the best way to sum it up is to say that the BRZ is a bit of a rough diamond.

The engine is a 2.0-litre horizontally opposed flat-four much like the one in the legendary rally-inspired Impreza WRX.

Unlike the Impreza, however, there's no turbocharger to give you that addictive induction whoosh and, sadly, none of the neck-snapping mid-range wallop that the turbo car produces.

Instead, the BRZ's engine produces a relatively modest 197bhp. That's not a lot in this day and age, but because the BRZ is also relatively light at 1239kg, that's more than enough puff to produce sub-7.0 second 0-60mph times.

Of course, you'll need to rev it until it's about to explode to produce these kind of figures. That's because the engine is very flat below 4000rpm; you find yourself working it for all its worth before grabbing another gear from the short-throw gearshift and spearing the accelerator back against the floor.

Due to its marginally firmer suspension, the Subaru feels slightly less at ease over lumps and bumps at low speeds than the GT86, but it also feels that little bit sharper as speeds build.

Get it flowing down a country road and it changes direction smoothly and accurately, thanks to its low centre of gravity and slick steering.

Turn the traction control off and let rip with the accelerator and the BRZ goes from being neutrally balanced to extremely tail-happy. This trait isn't helped by the standard low-rolling-resistance tyres, which can also produce embarrassing amounts of tyre squeal when simply pulling out of your drive.

The BRZ is also about as far from a sophisticated coupe as you can imagine. The transmission is clunky and noisy and you can forget about needing any driver-attention aids because the racket produced by tyre on Tarmac is guaranteed to prevent your from dozing off.

What's the 2012 Subaru BRZ like inside?
Pretty minimalist. The BRZ's cabin is constructed almost entirely from tough-wearing (cheap) plastics. Most of the switchgear is simply arranged, though, while a bank of toggle switches gives the dashboard a bit of a fillip.

The low-slung driving position is spot on, thanks to a chunky sports steering wheel and superbly supportive sports seats. Some taller drivers may find the steering wheel doesn't have quite enough height adjustment, though.

More damningly, the back seats are next to useless. Head- and legroom are far too tight for adults, and foot space is even tighter. Getting in and out of the rear is no pushover, either, so you'll be better off using the rear seats as extra luggage space. The boot is a reasonable 243 litres and just about wide enough to accept a set of golf clubs.

Should I buy one?
The first question you need to ask is should I buy a BRZ or a Toyota GT86. Our money would go on the Subaru.

Both cars are identically priced, both are built by Subaru and both produce the same amount of power and torque.

Even so, the BRZ's engine seems to develop more mid-range clout and is freer to rev. Whether this is a case of our Subaru BRZ test car having more miles on the clock - the Toyota felt extremely tight - or Subaru having reserved some software tinkering for its own cars, we'll find out more in our main group test (see the September issue of What Car? magazine, on sale July 26).

More tellingly, the BRZ's firmer suspension does impact on comfort, but it also gives a slight handling edge, which is more in keeping with the brief of a sports coupe.

The next question you need to ask is, whether either car is worth £25,000. You can blame the strength of the Yen for the steep pricing.

This is brought into sharper focus when you consider that for this kind of money you can have an Audi TT sitting on your drive, or, if you fancy something a bit more hardcore, the brilliant Renault Megane Renaultsport.

Subaru Needs Your Help Building 'The Guide To Everything'

Subaru

Subaru prides itself on being a brand for adventurous types -- a reputation that's reflected in the company's lineup of sporty, AWD vehicles.

Now, Subaru is asking those thrill-seekers -- whether they're Subaru owners, fans, or interested bystanders -- to help create a handbook for those who take the road less traveled.

It's called "The Subaru Guide To Everything", and you'll find it on Subaru's Facebook page. We received an email notice about it yesterday, with this text blurb:

"As a Subaru owner, you’ve probably found more than a few interesting places off the beaten path. It could be a great out–of–the–way restaurant, a remote scenic overlook, or a unique find right in town. Whatever it is, now you have the opportunity to share your discovery with a growing community of Subaru owners through 'The Subaru Guide To Everything.'"

The "Guide To Everything" takes the form of a Google map, with activities arranged into six categories: Hiking, Camping, Dogs, Sights, Biking, and Dining. Anyone can add a pin, a photo, and note to the map, and users can sort activities by category. Click on the "Dogs" tab, and you'll see just only those sites and activities that are dog-friendly, and so on.

The gist is that the "Guide to Everything" becomes a crowdsourced map of must-see places for serious travelers, not casual tourists. If you've ever used a guidebook like Lonely Planet, this is similar. In fact, Subaru has pulled points of interest from Lonely Planet to get the ball rolling.

While the map itself is interesting (heck apart from Martha Stewart, who doesn't like insider tips?), the most intriguing part of "The Subaru Guide To Everything" is that it's not designed to sell anything. There aren't any flashy banner ads, no videos to skip through. Like the "First Car Story" site that Subaru debuted in March, "The Guide To Everything" is essentially a branding exercise: Subaru gets to refine its image, and we get to share our travel secrets with complete strangers.

And that's a good thing.

This Subaru Started After Sitting On The Bottom Of A Lake For Three Months

Sub

Subarus are pretty amazing cars. As the owner of a beater '86 GL wagon, I'm biased, but now I have solid proof that they kick ass.

Some Finnish guy drove his '96 Subaru Legacy wagon out on the ice last winter. The ice cracked, the car sank, and it stayed under 12 feet of water until spring. When he pulled it out, it started on the first try.

This kind of stuff doesn't even happen in the movies, but after the Legacy's owner had drained the gas tank and oil reservoirs of lake water and hosed off the ECU with a can of brake parts cleaner, the thing fired right up. Surprisingly, all of the electronics worked, too.

Aside from some remnant water left in the fuel causing a lack of power, the car ran ok, too. Hooniverse reported that the guy and his friends drove it 12 miles without too much of a problem. It looks about like what you would expect a car that's sat on the bottom of a lake for a season might look, but in Finland, that's apparently pretty normal. As Hooniverse put it:

Of course, even non-submerged Subarus do not exactly have a rust-free reputation over here, but since most of them already look like they've spent time in water up to the beltline, how much worse can this one turn out to be?

Touché. The car's owner is considering putting it back on the road. After all, it passed its Ministry of Transportation inspection just before the dunking, so he might as well get his money's worth out the registration fees. (Hat tip to Kamil!)

Usain Bolt and Nissan GT-R Team up for New Marketing Campaign

Nissan

Three time Olympic Gold Medal sprinter Usain Bolt and Nissan Motor Co. have joined forces for a new marketing campaign. Dubbed “WHAT IF” the campaign is designed to tantalize the senses, highlighting Nissan’s vehicles and technologies designed to “excite,” such as the GT-R supercar.

According to Bolt, the partnership seemed logical, since as the world’s fastest man, he already owns one of the world’s fastest cars – a Nissan GT-R. “The Nissan GT-R is a wonderful car and perfect for me. I love everything in it. I enjoy driving it, and I feel completely safe, and that is the key thing for me,” he said.

The new campaign is the first to emerge from Nissan’s new global marketing arm, that was given a brief last year to develop programs that accelerate Nissan brand awareness, as part of the firm’s Power 88 business plan.

“WHAT IF” will initially be visible at major international airports worldwide from June 1, with the goal of lasting several years, via continuously refreshed content. Nissan says that the campaign will also feature prominently online with shareable social media content and more in depth stories and features.
